How does my son/daughter get on a Selects team?
Our Selects teams work with the very best young prospects across North America and Europe, the process to earn a roster spot is thorough. If the tryout year (peewee major) has passed for an age group, players can be evaluated by a member of our scouting staff to be placed on a Selects team roster at any of the following events: Selects Elite Camps, Local Training Centers (Cougars Programs), Spring and Winter Tournaments where Selects scout(s) are in attendance.
How many players do you carry on a roster?
Our standard roster for a tournament is 17 players (2G, 6D, 9F)
Who are the coaches?
Our tournament coaches are all former players (non-parent) who played the game at the Junior, College or professional levels.
The head instructors are all NCAA coaches, NHL coaches or scouts, AHL coaches, and/or Major Junior (CHL) coaches. Every year we have a blend of all 4 of these leagues at our Elite Camps.
How often does each team practice?
Our teams normally practice 2-3 times each Spring. We will hold 1-2 practices during the European Tour for each team and typically 1 practice prior to the first North American tournament each Spring. (Practice location will be the location of the tourney)
How does the Selects Hockey program provide exposure?
Our staff & camp instructors consist of coaches and scouts involved in various levels of hockey (Amateur, Junior, NCAA, & Professional). Our network of contacts has initiated or solidified opportunities for our players/alumni with NCAA, Junior A, USHL, USA NTDP and Major junior clubs. We are committed to helping our families in any way possible to garner hockey opportunities for our players.
Is the Selects Hockey program affiliated with any winter organizations? Are parents involved?
A fundamental principle of our program is that we are completely independent of winter hockey clubs and have NO parent involvement. Our coaches are all non-parents whom have played and/or coached the game at higher levels (College, Juniors & Professional). This independence allows us to run our program in an objective manner; simply put, we have ZERO politics behind our program- the best players will be invited, period.
How does the fundraising work for the Scandinavian tour?
A: Players invited to the overseas trip will be able to sell sponsorship ads in the trip program book to subsidize their trip fees. A sample of our program book will be available at the tryout for families to review examples of fundraising done by last year’s attendees. Each sponsorship obtained is tax deductible for the donating party.
Tryouts
When are tryouts?
We only hold a tryout for our first year with a particular age group, which is generally the Peewee Majors. After this year, we will invite players for each subsequent year based on their performance during the spring & scouting reports from their winter seasons. We receive a steady feed of input from on various players and our roster decisions are made for the benefit of the team and program. Player invitations each subsequent year are based SOLELY on performance. We reserve the right to replace a player at any time if he/she is struggling to fit into the level of play our teams compete at.
If my son is selected for the team, does he need to attend the overseas tour?
Historically there will always be a player or two that come to the tryout knowing that they cannot go on the trip due to school or other reasons. We will select the team assuming everybody can come on the trip. In the end, we may have a few players that cannot come and reserves will be invited in their place. After the tryout, and after you see the team roster and see how we run our program, we are hoping that ALL the kids selected will be able to attend.
Will you provide feedback from the tryout?
With so many players (200+) trying out on Jan 1 across the country, it is very difficult if not impossible to take too many notes on each player. Although we MAY be able to provide some feedback we would highly encourage you to send your son to our camp to receive specific feedback. At the camps we provide in depth player evaluations and 1 on 1 interviews/meetings with the camp instructors.
Must my son commit to do every event on the Spring schedule?
For the first Spring, we understand that some players may have other teams they have committed to prior to making our Selects team. We DO NOT mandate our players to do all events. Players’ selected can sign up for events from the Spring schedule in a “a la carte” fashion. We also understand that families will plan spring events such as vacations, weddings, etc. We appreciate our invitees prompt response when informing us of their spring intentions. We hope that families will want to be part of our organization in as many events as possible if invited. Players will get more benefit from our program based on a higher level of participation.
