Cougars Selects Players Represent Edmonton As the highly touted Super Novice Brick tourney quickly approaches in Edmonton Alberta, Canada in July, the Edmonton Cougars were represented well at the final skate late last week. Out of the 30 skaters at the final evaluation camp, 7 local Edmonton Cougars took the ice to represent the local branch. Coach of Team Brick basically could have picked 15 names out of hat and had a very strong team to represent Alberta in the upcoming tournament.
The following players should be very proud of their accomplishment and making it to the final skate. Ethan Mcindoe Forward, Joshuah Brindza Goalie, Dawson Bruneski Forward. Brayden Labant Forward, Brayden Nicholetts F/D, Marcus Kichton, Defense, and Ethan Sakowich, Defense.
Out of the 7 talented Cougars Ethan Mcindoe was successful in cracking the forward roster which only had 7 spots available for the 2009 edition of Alberta Brick. Ethan’s tenacious style and relentless work ethic has earned him the spot and will make him the a leader on the team, he will be a major component if the team is to be successful.
On a side note, Marcus Kichton, Brayden Labant, Brayden Nicholetts and Ethan Sakowich also played for the Cougars at NAPS in Buffalo this year winning Silver loosing a tight 2-1 game to the Russians.

97s win Bronze in Finland; 95s finish in 5th place Helsinki, Finland – The '97 Cougars Selects had some bitter sweet revenge on a skilled Russian team to win bronze and counter a round robin loss to the Russians at the Finland Lions Cup. The AAA team was selected from a Christmas tryout in Ottawa along with some handpicked Cougars Selects players in the US and the European Selects organization. Ian Johnston from the Kanata Blazers led the team in scoring and Cameron Cook and Joey Laird provided some timely goals. The team was anchored by a physical defence core and goalie Brandon Giroux of the Ottawa Sting played great against the European shooters.
The team started the Tour in Stockholm with 2 strong wins against AIK and Djurgarden two of Sweden’s elite Peewee teams. Upon arriving in Finland, the team lost its first game to a strong Russian Club team called Blue Bird by a 4-2 margin. After winning the next 3 games to remain in contention for the gold, the Cougars Selects lost a semi-final heartbreaker in a shootout which forced a bronze medal rematch against the Blue Bird Russian team. Despite being fatigued from the 6 games in 3 days alongside the tourist activities and intense games of ‘manhunt’, the team held on for a 3-1 win to take home the bronze medal.
The '95 Cougars Selects were also in the Finland Lions Cup and came up just shy in the Consolation Final. The team started strong against some very tough Swedish opponents in exhibition play including a tough loss against Sweden's premier team at the '95 level DE Hockey where goaltender Kenny Appleby stopped 52 saves. The team played .500 hockey in a very competitive '95 Pool in the tournament and lost 2-1 to the Canadian Elite in the Consolation Final.
Congrats on a great job well done to both teams! The planning has already started for next year!!

ECS Alum Scores OT Goal in National Championship!
Best For Last: Boston University Rallies To National Title
Terriers' Colby Cohen Nets OT Winner After Furious Comeback
by Jim Connelly/Senior Writer
WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 11) — The team of destiny fulfilled it on Saturday night. But boy, it wasn’t easy.
In one of the most incredible comebacks in NCAA tournament history, Boston University defeated Miami 4-3 on a Colby Cohen goal at 11:47 of overtime to capture the school’s fifth national title and first since 1995.
Cohen’s shot from above the left faceoff circle deflected off Miami’s Kevin Roeder, popped in the air and looped over goaltender Cody Reichard (28 saves) to send the BU faithful who were part of the capacity crowd of 18,512 at the Verizon Center into pandemonium.
Boston University won its fifth national title Saturday night (photo: Jim Rosvold).
“It’s just an unbelievable feeling,” said Cohen, who was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. “I’ve been close to scoring a couple of goals this weekend and hit a couple of [cross] bars. I just let it go and I saw it deflect and go up over the goalie’s glove and saw it went in. I don’t remember anything after that.”
“I didn’t even see it go in,” said defenseman Matt Gilroy. “But the bench just erupted. It was just unbelievable.”
“Unbelievable” might be the best way to describe how the game got to overtime. If you didn’t see it with your own eyes, you might not believe it.
After Miami broke a 1-1 deadlock on a Tommy Wingels goal with 7:29 remaining in the third period and Trent Vogelhuber buried an insurance marker with 4:08 left, the RedHawks looked to be headed to their first-ever national title.
That was until BU scored two extra-attacker goals in the final minute of regulation.
BU coach Jack Parker pulled goaltender Kieran Millan with 3:32 remaining in regulation and Zach Cohen banged a rebound home at the left post with 59.5 seconds remaining to draw the Terriers within a goal. That set up Nick Bonino, who one-timed a pass at the right faceoff dot past Reichard with 17.4 seconds to play to force the extra session.

“I got the puck and saw Nick sitting wide open,” said Gilroy of the tying goal. “You put the puck on Nick’s stick and he’s going to put it away.”
The ending to regulation and the ultimate game winner in overtime spoiled an incredible effort by Miami, a Cinderella team that entered the tournament as the 13th overall seed but gave BU all it could handle throughout the title game.
Miami was the more physical of the two teams, pressured the Terrier defense and until the final minute limited BU to just 19 shots. It’s that that made this pill extremely difficult for the RedHawks to swallow.
“It wasn’t meant to be,” said Miami coach Enrico Blasi, who has coached his team over the last four years to the best overall winning percentage in college hockey. “BU played great and executed in the end. It was a great college hockey game and I’m extremely proud of my guys.”
While what is talked about in this game will be its ending, one of the major factors was the play of the Boston University penalty killers. BU gave Miami seven chances on the power play but the penalty killers were strong all night, limiting Miami’s grade ‘A’ attempts and holding the power play off the scoreboard.
“One of the real Achilles’ heels of this team has been the penalty taking, and we took some stupid penalties tonight,” said Parker. “But our penalty killers bailed out their teammates. It wasn’t anything technical. They just played a little bit harder and a little bit smarter.”
BU took an early lead on a first-period Chris Connolly goal at 15:15. Defenseman David Warsofsky sent a puck on net from the left point that hit Miami’s Alden Hirschfeld and deflected towards Reichard. Before Reichard could cover the puck, Connolly got enough of it to push it into the net.
Miami had plenty of chances of its own in the first, particularly on three power plays, but was unable to solve Millan (29 saves).
Through 20 minutes, Miami held a 10-9 advantage in shots.
Miami penalty late in the first put the Terriers on the power play to start the second. BU’s Chris Higgins had two point-blank opportunities at open nets, fanning on one and redirecting another off the side of the net.
The early action Saturday was fast-paced and hard-hitting (photo: Melissa Wade).
Once the RedHawks killed the BU power play, they used the momentum to draw even at 2:01. Gary Steffes buried a loose puck in a scrum in front of Millan for his 11th goal of the season, sending the Miami faithful into a frenzy.
Both clubs had quality chances throughout the remainder of the period. Miami’s Justin Mercier was stopped by Millan on a 2-on-0 at 10:45. Colby Cohen then rang a blast from the left point off the post with six minutes remaining to send the game to the third tied.
Wingels’ goal came after Carter Camper made a dangling move at the blueline and fired a low shot on Millan. Wingels was Johnny-on-the-spot, burying the rebound with 7:29 left.
After Miami failed on the power play for the seventh time in the game, Vogelhuber picked the perfect time to score his second goal of the season, firing a hard wrist shot inside the right post.
That, though, only set up BU’s last-minute heroics that forced the overtime.
The national title is the fifth for Boston University and the third for head coach Jack Parker (1978, 1995). It also marks the end to the greatest season in BU history, as the club set the all-time mark for wins with 35 and won every championship for which it competed all year.
All of which might be why the late comeback and the ultimate victory were not so surprising. Simply put, this was a team of destiny.

Scott Harrington Featured in the Hockey News
ECS 93 Defenseman Scott Harrington received press in THN.com's new weekly feature focusing on minor hockey prospects destined to become big names in major junior or the NCAA - and hopefully one day, the NHL. He is off fast start this season tallying 12 goals and 24 points through his first 16 games with the Greater Kingston Jr. Frontenacs and was even called up to play a few exhibitions with the local Jr. A Voyageurs.
The 15 year old defenseman is expected to go high in the upcoming 2009 OHL draft, but is still keeping his NCAA options open. Harrington's future looks bright, whichever route he chooses.
Thirteen alumni from the East Coast Selects program will participate in the 6th annual ADT Canada-Russia Challenge to be held at the end of November. Each of the three CHL member leagues assembled a selection committee, which worked closely with Hockey Canada's Chief Scout, Al Murray, to select the players for this year's ADT Challenge. The ADT Canada-Russia Challenge plays a key role in the selection process of Canada's World Junior Hockey Championship and Under-18 Championship teams.
Also of note is that Selects Hockey Elite Camp instructor Mario Durocher of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles was selected as one of the coaches for the ADT Challenge QMJHL team. Mario is in his 1st year as head coach of the Screaming Eagles, he has participated as a head coach at the Selects Hockey camps over the past 3 years.

Gordie Howe Golf Classic a HUGE Success!
Young fans meet hockey legend Howe Kevin Oklobzija Staff writer June 27, 2008 VICTOR
The knees of Mr. Hockey, both already rebuilt long ago, make more noise than a 20-year-old car that was never rustproofed. "But that's a good thing," Gordie Howe said. "If they don't make a noise, it's bad." Depending on his movements, pain stabs like a knife in three different spots in his left shoulder. Arthritis has made it difficult for him to tightly grip a golf club or a hockey stick for that matter. His elbows are just fine, though. So the golfers in Thursday's Gordie Howe Golf Classic learned. Rather than swat a ball around the Ravenwood Golf Club layout, Mr. Hockey did a meet-and-greet at the 10th tee. He chatted with the golfers, posed for pictures and showed that his once razor-sharp left elbow is still quick and still sharp. As he posed with players, Howe threw an occasional playful elbow to the ribs. "You haven't been elbowed until you've been elbowed by Gordie Howe," Ed Douesnard of Cardinal, Ontario, said proudly. Douesnard, like all the golfers, was caught off guard. No one ever suspected this 80-year-old man would be jabbing them with the same elbow he threw 60 years ago while making space for himself and his linemates on the ice.
"It was a cheap shot," laughed Curran O'Brien, 14, of Greece after he was poked. Could there be a better way to spend a summer afternoon than on the golf course and talking hockey at the 10th tee with Mr. Hockey? "When I saw this tournament was coming, I said, 'I have to go.' Where else am I going to meet Gordie Howe?" said Ryan Welch, 25, of Rochester, a Detroit Red Wings fan who appropriately wore a Red Wings golf shirt.
After their picture was taken, golfers had to prove they could hit the ball. Patrick Kane, the NHL rookie of the year from the Chicago Blackhawks, failed miserably under the pressure of Mr. Hockey's eyes. His tee shot may have killed a dozen earth worms. "Not good," Gordie said. But Brian Bailey and Nick Ventura, both 16-year-olds from Fairport, were great off the tee. And much better than their fathers, Kevin Bailey and Dennis Ventura. "My heart was pounding," Nick Ventura admitted after a drive worthy of television. Bailey, sporting his Fairport High School Golf Team shirt, did the program proud with a bomb of a drive that virtually split the fairway in half.
Pressure? What pressure? "I've been in more nerve-racking situations, I guess," Bailey said, referring to tiebreaking shootouts at hockey tournaments.
Howe seemed to be enjoying every minute of the interaction. He doesn't do many of these outings anymore. He is slowing down a little, and he also doesn't want to be away from his wife, Colleen. Mrs. Hockey suffers from Pick's disease and is for the most part bedridden at their home near Detroit. Gordie's connections to hockey usually come at night, on television, "after I tuck her in at 8 o'clock." He came to Rochester to help with fund-raising for Howe Hockey Development, a worldwide program for elite players ages 13 to 16 that is co-owned by his grandson, Travis.
Howe Hockey Development helps with funding for underprivileged players. "There may be a great hockey talent whose parents can afford skates but can't afford to send him to Rochester for our camp," said John St. Pierre, another of the co-founders. "We're using this to raise money for that fund." The fundraising continues today when Howe signs autographs at the ESL Sports Centre from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
When Howe was a teenager growing up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, he didn't spend many summer days on the golf course. "You gotta be strong," Howe recalls his father telling him. "Take the garbage out." Albert Howe was a foreman on the city street crew and got Gordie a job helping to build curbing and gutters when he was 15. "They told me if you can't stay with the men, they'd give me a different job," Howe said. "Those bags of cement weighed 95.6 pounds," he said. "I had no problem lifting them.
All I was after was the strength it gave me." That might be why Howe was never afraid on the ice. Not even when he was 45 and playing against the notorious Hanson Brothers of Slap Shot fame in real life they were the Carlson brothers playing for the WHA's Minnesota Fighting Saints. "I tripped one of them," Howe recalls of his days with the Houston Aeros, "and he told me, 'Hey, don't do that. I have a hard enough time skating.'" KEVINO@DemocratandChronicle.com

ISS Hockey to Scout NAPS International Scouting Services (ISS) is the leader in hockey information and development worldwide. Founded in 2003, ISS rankings are used by most leading hockey media outlets such as The Hockey News and TSN. Many professional teams, including NHL, CHL, NCAA and even some major league(s) subscribe to ISS products and services.
The ISS Player Evaluation Program (PEP) provides all players with an opportunity to get evaluated. Just recently, the March, 2008, edition of the Hockey News called the ISS program a Scouting Revolution. We are very excited at the prospect of providing all players from all levels with an opportunity to showcase their talents, said Matt Ebbs, ISS, General Manager. Many players get scouted at tournaments, however the information the scouts obtain remains confidential to that scouts team, and it is not shared with the player; as a consequence, little or no improvement takes place.
With ISSs new Player Evaluation Program players can finally get an unbiased professional assessment of where they rank compared to their peers. They see clearly what they need to work on to be a top player in their sport. said John St.-Pierre from Howe Hockey Development.
ISS intends on finding all of the diamonds in the rough playing hockey in the NAPS, Warrior Meltdown and Chowder Cup tournaments.
